"Join & Volunteer"

We make a living by what we get, but we make a life by what we give... Winston Churchil

Who we are

We are the New York Susquehanna & Western Technical & Historical Society Inc.

We are a 501 (c) (3) non profit corporation incorporated in the State of New Jersey. Our railroad is almost entirely operated by volunteers, in fact, we only  have one full time employee, our Chief Mechanical Engineer. The society is now over 25 years old, and has been active in all corners of the state. Since 2004 we have operated the Delaware River Railroad Excursions in Phillipsburg, New Jersey. The society also has a beautifully restored station in Maywood New Jersey. This division of our society is called the Maywood Station Historical Committee .

Because the society is so diverse, there are many areas where you may volunteer.  Our currently have over 400 members, one quarter of which are actively involved in the societies activities.

Points of interest

All skill levels from novis, to professional railroaders welcome!

No prior knowledge is necessary, but, pipe fitters, electricians, welders, boiler makers and mechanics are always in need! Click here to learn more about the Steam Program.

  • The Operations Department

Our program enables our volunteers to advance through the hierarchy of the train crew. You can start as a Car Host, become a Trainmen, then advance to Conductor. Our program is a federally qualified  training program as regulated by the Federal railroad Administration and administered by our partner, the Black River and Western Railroad System.
