The Mechanical Department is responsible for the restoration and maintenance of the Society's historic railroad equipment.
The members of the Mechanical Department form the core group of dedicated members who are the driving force behind the Society.

The NYSWTHS owns Steam Locomotive #142 No. 142 which was built in the Peoples Republic of China in 1988 by the TangShan Locomotive Works. TangShan is the last place in the world still producing new steam engines. The locomotive resembles trains from an era long ago.
